So the last Spanish show this tour and the longest ever - why does this sort of stat not surprise us any more?
Stan Goldstein reports-:
Stan Goldstein reports-:
Springsteen, who is known for his marathon shows, keeps going longer and longer as he and the E Street Band played an incredible three-hour-and-48-minute, 32-song show at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid, Spain on Sunday. The show ended at 1:24 a.m.
This surpasses the previously longest show, Dec. 31, 1980 at the Nassau Coliseum, which clocked in at 3:43 (it did have an intermission making it longer timewise, we only count actual time of music) and the show this past June 7 in Milan, Italy which clocked it at 3:38.
The set list was highlighted by the first ever performance of "Spanish Eyes" from "The Promise" box set in 2010. It is from the 1977-78 "Darkness" recording sessions. Also Southside Johnny joined Springsteen for "Talk to Me" and "Twist and Shout."
And on a sad note :-
"The River" is dedicated to Nacho, a child who died of cancer a couple of days before this show, for which he had a ticket
Two of our Bruce buddies were on the spot so we have a first hand account :-
What can we say - it was utterly fantastic. All the tiredness after queuing for a solid 9.5 hours simply disappeared and we seemed to be floating on air. Kev got to swap sweat with the man when he touched his hand during 10th Avenue Freeze-out. i was desperately waiting for him to do the crowd-surfing during 6345789 - but nor to be - this time. Jack of all Trades made me cry with everyone shining a light right across the stadium - Bernabau was fabulous. And it was great seeing Southside Johnny. Finishing at 1.30am meant we all had to walk back to the centre but that was fine - the atmosphere was wonderful. Still managed to get a beer before bedtime! Madrid is a great city and we've always enjoyed the wild nights there!

Would've been a great show for me. Spanish Eyes - a song I've liked since I heard the original outtake - and Talk To Me with Southside Johnny. We did wonder whether Southside would join Bruce as he had been spotted in Spain enjoying a bevvy. He is coming to the UK but not until 28th June so, unless he's popped over early to enjoy our beautiful summer weather, (ahem) I doubt we will have the pleasure of seeing them together on stage in the UK. A shame for me as seeing the two of them singing together would be one of my like-to-see moments.
Anyway our man is now on his way to us. Montpelier will be his last concert in warmer climes. Let's hope the shows don't get shorter as he heads north.
So here is the full set list.
